Leicester Future BAME Entrepreneurs
Applications for this programme have now closed.
De Montfort University is launching a special Summer School, called Leicester Future BAME Entrepreneurs. Students are invited to find out more in the new Entrepreneurship PopUp space in Kimberlin Library’s Coaching Corner on Monday 6 June, 10 – 10.30am.
The programme is a spin-off from the University’s hugely successful Entrepreneurship programme, Leicester Future Entrepreneurs which is funded by BID Leicester. The new programme is funded by the Office for Students (Ofs) and is part of DMU’s award-winning Leicester Future Leaders initiative.
This new programme comes after a report by the British Business Bank conducted in 2020 concluded that business start-up rates were lowest among entrepreneurs from Asian and Other backgrounds, while Black and White entrepreneurs have similar start-up success rates. Asian and Other businesses have better outcomes than those run by Black entrepreneurs, while White-owned enterprises had the highest productivity on average and they were more likely to be profitable. DMU will offer online workshops and mentoring sessions that will help BAME students and graduates to develop entrepreneurial skills and take their business ideas forward.
The programme will run throughout July 2022, proceeded by an Introductory event in June and tailed with a closing event in August. Participants will also undertake a field trip as part of their learning.
Participants will need to live in Leicester or Leicestershire to participate in the scheme.
Simon Baines, DMU’s student and graduate enterprise project manager said “We were blown away by the interest in our Leicester Future Entrepreneurs programme which has been a runaway success and has seen some fantastic new ideas, mentoring and personal development taking place. We are thrilled that we can host this special spin-off programme this Summer thanks to the OfS and we can’t wait to get started!”.
