Health and Life Sciences STEM in Entrepreneurship programme crowns winners

De Montfort University (DMU) recently hosted a transformative three-day programme designed to equip Health and Life Sciences (HLS) students with essential entrepreneurial skills and a forward-thinking mindset. The event, a collaboration between the DMU Made team and the HLS faculty, ran on November 19, 20, and 28, offering students a dynamic blend of workshops, brainstorming sessions, and a competitive pitch event.

Day 1: Unlocking Entrepreneurial Potential:

The programme launched on November 19 with a warm welcome from Dr. Ude, followed by workshops delivered by the DMU Made team, led by Simon Baines. Dr. Nikki Brooks and Anna Chesters supported the sessions, which focused on developing an entrepreneurial mindset and recognising personal potential.

Day 2: From Ideas to Business Plans:

On November 20, students participated in two practical workshops: "From Idea to Business Plan" and "Pitching Your STEM Business Idea." These sessions prepared attendees for a collaborative brainstorming exercise, where they developed innovative business concepts tailored to their fields of study.

 Day 3: Pitching and Prizes:

The final day, November 28, featured the "Marketing Your STEM Business Idea" workshop, culminating in a business pitch competition. Students presented their concepts to a panel of esteemed judges: Prof. David Proverb, Ben Ravilious, and Annie Taylor. The competition offered cash prizes of up to £1,000, and the winners were:

  1. First Place (£500): Pharm Access by Sofia Laurd and Hajara Zinsonni

  2. Second Place (£300): Home Medicx by Philemon Nkuranga and Elhmedi Tahiri

  3. Third Place (£200): S.E.A.C. by Andy Bruce

The event concluded with feedback on pitch improvements from Ben Ravilious and a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Ude. Acknowledgments were extended to all contributors, whose efforts ensured the event's success.
